Last year, we merged with East Coast Hospice
to form St Elizabeth East Coast Hospice, with
the shared ambition to grow palliative care
services in Great Yarmouth and Waveney.
At the time of this announcement, we committed to conduct
a feasibility study into the viability of building hospice
facilities on the land in Gorleston, previously acquired by
East Coast Hospice.
Following the completion of the feasibility
study, our board has committed to the vision of
building hospice care facilities in Great Yarmouth
and Waveney, following a phased approach as
funds and service commissioning allow.
We then invited expressions of interest from
architect firms, before selecting Norwichbased LSI
Architects - a firm with a long
history of designing hospices, including Priscilla
Bacon Hospice in Norwich.
We will now be working with LSI Architects to
engage with staff, volunteers, stakeholders and
the community, for the next stage of planning,
as we move forward with our ambition of
providing a long-term hospice care base for
the local community.
This work will build upon and work in
conjunction with our current services in the
area, delivered in partnership with East Coast
Community Healthcare (ECCH), which have
supported more than 4,900 patients and their
families since April 2019.
"Dad was comfortable and he was happy
Mum, and the whole family, had the hospice
for support," said Kerrie-Ann French,
whose Dad, John French, received support
from our team, until his death aged
59-years-old in 2022.
John was first diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer in May 2021. Shortly after this
he was recommended the support of St
Elizabeth East Coast Hospice.
Katrina, John's wife, said: "John was keen
to be supported at home and the hospice
enabled him to achieve this before he
passed away at the hospital.
"As a family, we had never experienced
hospice care and we assumed this would
be purely end-of-life care, but they provide
so much more, to both the patient and
their wider family.
"I have accessed their therapy and counselling
services and John often said 'I am so glad the
hospice have helped us'. St Elizabeth East
Coast Hospice made a difference to our
family, during a difficult time."
